Capsule Geology

The Vol occurrence is located in the upper reaches of Volcanic Creek about 24 kilometres north-northeast of the community of Atlin.

The area is underlain by sediments of the Mississippian to Triassic Kedahda Formation of the Cache Creek Complex. These consist of an interbedded sequence of dark grey cherty argillite with calcareous bands, siltstones, and quartzite. The rocks are intruded by Late Cretaceous Surprise Lake batholith quartz monzonite to granodiorite. Extensive Pleistocene basaltic flows and scoria overlie granitic basement rock in the occurrence area.

Disseminated molybdenite is present in the intrusion near the contact with the sediments. Other minerals include pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite and rare scheelite.

In 1978, Cominco Ltd. carried out geological mapping in conjunction with geochemical sampling of stream sediments and rocks. The principal aim during this initial phase was to evaluate the uranium potential of possible Pleistocene gravels underlying basaltic cover and to provide a basis for further work in 1979. A total of 17 water samples, 12 stream sediment samples, and 1 rock sample were collected from the Vol claim. In the course of this exploration sparse molybdenite mineralization was discovered.

In 2016-2017, Merlin Geoscience Inc. conducted geological mapping, prospecting, and rock geochemical sampling in several areas on the Sunrise Property, around the margins of both the Surprise Lake batholith and the Fourth of July batholith.
